We look forward to next year’s celebration, continuing the tradition of embracing the beauty, diversity, and spirit of Africa.

Empowering Youth Through Climate and Food Justice: AYDEPI’s Hands-On Program

At AYDEPI, we believe that youth are the heart of community transformation. Our Youth Climate and Food Justice Program combines farming, composting, education, and cultural engagement to empower young people to take action for a healthier, more sustainable world.

Growing Knowledge and Community

The program introduces youth to sustainable farming practices, teaching them how to cultivate a variety of crops including glowing carrots, cabbages, onions, and African nightshade. Participants learn about soil health, seasonal planting, crop rotation, and ecological balance, connecting them directly to the land and their communities.

Composting is another key focus. Youth learn how organic waste can become nutrient-rich soil, reducing landfill waste while supporting healthy crops. This process reinforces lessons in environmental stewardship and circular economy principles, giving participants practical skills they can apply at home and in their neighborhoods.

Education Meets Culture

Beyond farming and composting, the program integrates climate and food justice education, helping youth understand how systemic inequities affect access to healthy food and environmental resources. Workshops cover topics like:

  • Climate change and its local impacts
  • Food insecurity and equitable access to nutrition
  • Community activism and advocacy for environmental justice

The program also celebrates cultural traditions around food and farming. Youth explore diverse culinary practices, heritage crops, and storytelling, creating a space where culture and sustainability intersect. Growing African nightshade and traditional vegetables helps participants connect to cultural roots while learning sustainable farming practices.

Leadership Through Action

Youth participants are encouraged to lead initiatives, mentor peers, and share knowledge with their families and neighborhoods. By growing food like cabbages, glowing carrots, and onions, managing compost, and educating others, they develop leadership, teamwork, and civic engagement skills that extend far beyond the garden.

One parent reflected on the experience:

“I can’t imagine my son has planted, weeded, watered, and seen the plants grow until harvest. It’s a process he will never forget — also for feeding the less fortunate and those who cannot do the work.”

Training for Real-World Impact

“As a chemical engineer, reported by one of the recent graduates, I see tremendous value in programs like this. Scientific training empowers communities to understand pollution at its source, interpret data, and take informed action. With knowledge and practical skills, residents can educate themselves and others, leading to healthier environments and safer food and water for everyone.”

Building a Sustainable Future

AYDEPI’s Youth Climate and Food Justice Program equips young people with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to address climate challenges, promote sustainable food systems, and inspire community change. Through hands-on learning, cultural engagement, and environmental advocacy, youth become empowered to create healthier, more equitable communities.

By bridging education, action, and culture, AYDEPI is fostering a generation of environmentally conscious leaders who understand that climate justice and food justice go hand in hand.

AYDEPI Launches Curriculum on Fecal Pollution to Educate Youth and Communities Across King County

Understanding environmental health is key to building strong, informed communities. AYDEPI is proud to lead a new initiative focused on fecal pollution, bringing critical awareness and actionable knowledge to youth and residents throughout King County.

Why Fecal Pollution Matters

Fecal pollution in water sources is a major public health concern, contributing to the spread of harmful bacteria and viruses. It can impact drinking water, recreational areas, and local ecosystems. Many communities are unaware of how pollution occurs, how it spreads, and what steps can prevent it.

AYDEPI’s Fecal Pollution Curriculum Program is designed to fill this knowledge gap, empowering young people to understand the science, recognize risks, and engage in practical solutions.

Program Curriculum and Activities

The curriculum is structured to be hands-on, interactive, and engaging, combining science education with community action. Participants learn about:

  • Sources of fecal pollution and how it affects water quality
  • Testing and monitoring techniques for water contamination
  • Health risks associated with polluted water
  • Preventive and mitigation strategies for households and communities
  • Community advocacy to protect local water sources

Activities include field visits to local water bodies, laboratory demonstrations, and interactive workshops where youth practice water testing and analyze results.

Youth Engagement and Leadership

This program was led by Fiona, Ashley, Awate, Trina, Sincyre, and Medi, with guidance and oversight from Ms. Beatrice Kiraguri and Eunbi Lee. The youth leaders played a key role in sharing information, translating materials, and supporting engagement across communities. They helped participants understand how pollution affects health and the environment while providing practical solutions for prevention and mitigation.

“This program taught me how our daily actions affect water quality and how we can make a difference in our community,” shared one participant.

Training for Real-World Impact

“As a chemical engineer, I see tremendous value in programs like this. Scientific training empowers communities to understand pollution at its source, interpret data, and take informed action. With knowledge and practical skills, residents can educate themselves and others, leading to healthier environments and safer water for everyone.” – Reported by Fiona

Building Healthier Communities

By combining education, science, and community outreach, AYDEPI’s Fecal Pollution Curriculum Program strengthens awareness, prevention, and advocacy across King County. The program equips youth and residents with the knowledge and tools to protect public health, safeguard local water sources, and promote environmental sustainability.

AYDEPI is proud to lead this initiative, nurturing a generation of informed, proactive, and environmentally conscious leaders.

AYDEPI Partners with King County Metro to Engage Community on South King County Transit Changes

As our region continues to grow, transportation is evolving to better serve residents, workers, and families. AYDEPI is proud to partner with King County Metro to help ensure that South King County communities — especially immigrants, youth, and families — understand and have a voice in the upcoming bus route changes and the Link Light Rail expansion connecting Federal Way, Kent, and nearby areas.

Bringing Transit Information to the Community

Many South King County residents rely on public transportation every day — to get to school, work, medical appointments, and community events. Recognizing that service changes can affect families differently, AYDEPI worked alongside Metro to host community conversations, outreach sessions, and youth-led forums. These spaces created opportunities for residents to:

  • Learn about upcoming bus service changes
  • Understand how the new Link Light Rail will connect cities like Federal Way, Kent, and SeaTac
  • Share feedback about accessibility, scheduling, and service needs
  • Receive updates in culturally and linguistically inclusive ways

By collaborating with trusted community organizations like AYDEPI, King County Metro ensured that every voice — especially from immigrant and youth communities — was heard and included in the decision-making process.

Youth at the Heart of Engagement

This project is being led by three dedicated college/university students: Sincyre Bell, Awate Benea, and Trina Wamunyu. They played a key role in sharing information, translating materials, and supporting engagement across neighborhoods. They helped families understand how the changes would affect their daily commutes and provided valuable feedback to Metro staff on community priorities — from safety and reliability to convenience and accessibility.

“It’s important that our families know how to get to school, work, or the hospital without confusion,” shared Sincyre Bell, AYDEPI youth leader, mentor, and college student. “Being part of this project helped me understand how transit planning impacts everyone.”

Connecting Communities and Opportunities

The upcoming Link Light Rail extension and bus route adjustments aim to make travel faster, greener, and more connected — linking Federal Way, Kent, and surrounding cities with the greater Seattle area. For South King County residents, this means greater access to education, jobs, and community spaces, and a more sustainable transportation future.

AYDEPI is honored to serve as a bridge between policy and people — ensuring that transit changes are not only understood, but also shaped by the communities they serve.

From Mentees to Mentors: The Power of Peer-Led Coaching in AYDEPI

At the African Young Dreamers Empowerment Program International (AYDEPI), we believe that true leadership begins within the community. Our Bridge to Harmony men’s-only mentorship program is a living testament to that belief—a space where transformation unfolds, and young men evolve from mentees into confident, compassionate mentors, ready to lead their peers and uplift their communities.

Designed to serve young men in South King County, Washington, Bridge to Harmony addresses a pressing need for positive male mentorship. The program supports youth facing challenges such as trauma, anger management, and societal pressures, equipping them with vital tools in emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, and leadership. Today, we proudly celebrate the remarkable journey of participants who began as mentees and have now stepped into leadership roles—proving that peer-led coaching isn’t just effective; it’s transformative.

Leadership That Inspires: Anthony Curtis and Emerging Youth Mentors

At the heart of Bridge to Harmony is Anthony Curtis, Executive Director and Founder of the Black Equality Coalition. With years of experience in youth development and community building, Anthony has created a space where young men feel seen, supported, and empowered to grow. Under his guidance, leadership is not just taught—it’s modeled and nurtured.

Joining Anthony are passionate youth leaders who have become the pillars of the program: Sincyre Bell, Medichael Mereste, Manasse Dias, and Denzel Kimani. These young men bring authenticity and relatability to their roles, sharing their personal struggles and triumphs while mentoring others. Their leadership is not only instructional but deeply human—demonstrating resilience, empathy, and the power of shared experience.

From Mentees to Mentors: The Power of Transformation

One of the most profound outcomes of the Bridge to Harmony program is the organic shift from mentee to mentor. This transition represents more than personal growth—it’s a ripple effect of empowerment. As young men gain confidence and perspective, they begin to uplift others, creating a cycle of support that strengthens the entire community.

Youth leaders like Sincyre Bell and Medichael Mereste have embodied this transformation. Having walked the path themselves, they now guide peer-led workshops focused on self-regulation, leadership, and conflict resolution. Their journeys are proof that with the right support, young men can rise above their circumstances and become agents of change.

Core Pillars of the Program: Emotional Intelligence, Conflict Resolution & Leadership

Leadership Development
Leadership is more than a title—it’s a responsibility. In Bridge to Harmony, young men learn that true leadership comes from action, empathy, and integrity. Through hands-on experiences—facilitating group discussions, leading community initiatives, or mentoring younger participants—they gain confidence and purpose. The program empowers them to lead with vision and values, both within the group and in their broader communities.

Conflict Resolution
Navigating conflict is a critical life skill. Bridge to Harmony provides practical tools and frameworks for resolving disagreements constructively. Through role-playing, peer coaching, and reflective conversations, participants learn how to de-escalate tensions, communicate clearly, and find peaceful solutions. By sharing real-life stories, youth leaders help normalize these challenges and model healthy ways to respond.

Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence—understanding and managing one’s own emotions while being attuned to others—is foundational to success in all areas of life. In the program, young men explore emotional awareness, self-regulation strategies, and healthy expression. Through guided exercises and discussions, they learn how to transform anger and frustration into clarity, strength, and meaningful connection.

The Ripple Effect: Community Change Through Peer-Led Coaching

What makes Bridge to Harmony unique is its peer-led approach. Participants are not just learning—they are actively shaping one another’s growth. This fosters accountability, mutual respect, and a strong sense of ownership. As mentors emerge from within the group, they bring authenticity and relatability that resonate deeply with their peers.

This peer-led model creates a lasting ripple effect. As young leaders model positive behaviors and share what they’ve learned, they inspire others to grow, lead, and contribute—amplifying the impact of the program far beyond its sessions.

A Legacy of Empowerment

Bridge to Harmony is more than a mentorship program—it’s a movement. It’s about creating a legacy of empowered young men who uplift each other and their communities. Thanks to the visionary leadership of Anthony Curtis and the dedication of youth leaders like Sincyre, Medichael, Manasse, and Denzel, the program has become a beacon of hope, growth, and transformation.

At AYDEPI, we remain committed to nurturing this powerful journey—from mentee to mentor, from learner to leader. Bridge to Harmony proves that when young men are given the tools, support, and space to lead, they rise to the occasion—and in doing so, they change the world around them.

Together, we are building a future of empowered leaders—one young man at a time.

AYDEPI Youth: Leading the Charge for a Greener Future in 2025

Introduction
In 2025, AYDEPI’s youth activists are at the forefront of environmental change, proving that passion and collective action can transform communities. Through hands-on projects—from tree planting to park cleanups—our young leaders are not just dreaming of a sustainable future; they’re building it. Every seed planted, every piece of litter removed, and every tree saved brings us closer to a healthier planet.

A Cleaner Tomorrow Starts Today

Neglected parks and littered streets don’t just harm the environment—they weaken community spirit. That’s why AYDEPI volunteers roll up their sleeves to restore these spaces. Partnering with local leaders, we organize cleanups that do more than beautify; they inspire lasting change.

A Spotlight on Impact:
On March 29, 2025, an incredible team of Dreamers gathered at Federal Way High School for a massive cleanup effort. Students, families, and community members worked side by side, filling bags with waste, sorting recyclables, and even educating bystanders on sustainability. The result? A cleaner, safer campus—and proof that small actions create big ripples.

Restoring Our Ecosystems, One Tree at a Time

Trees are the lungs of our planet, and AYDEPI is on a mission to plant thousands of native trees in 2025. We carefully select species that thrive locally, boosting biodiversity, cooling urban areas, and fighting climate change. These trees aren’t just for today—they’re a gift to future generations.

Defending Trees from Hidden Threats

Did you know ivy can strangle a tree? While it looks harmless, invasive ivy blocks sunlight, steals nutrients, and can ultimately kill its host. AYDEPI’s youth are tackling this problem head-on, removing ivy from parks and teaching communities how to protect their green spaces.

Nurturing Growth for the Long Haul

Planting trees is just the beginning. Our teams mulch, water, and monitor young trees to ensure they survive and flourish. By using sustainable techniques—like moisture-retaining mulch and smart watering schedules—we’re giving these trees the best chance to grow strong.

Join the Movement!

AYDEPI’s work thrives because of people like you. Whether you’re a student, a volunteer, or simply someone who cares, your hands can make a difference. Here’s how to get involved:
Participate in our next cleanup or tree-planting event.
Follow us on social media to stay updated.
Spread the word—bring a friend and double your impact!

Together, we can make 2025 the year of action. Let’s create greener neighborhoods, healthier ecosystems, and a legacy of environmental leadership.

Dreamers in Action: How Soccer is Shaping the Next Generation of Leaders

The Dreamers in Action Soccer Program is not just about soccer—it’s a powerful youth incubator that goes beyond athleticism to focus on mentorship, leadership, and community building. At its heart, this dynamic program is designed to empower young individuals, teaching them valuable life skills that extend far beyond the soccer field. Through sports, young people are brought together, creating a sense of belonging and unity that fosters collaboration, connection, and growth. But it doesn’t stop at physical fitness; Dreamers in Action nurtures the full spectrum of personal development, preparing youth for success both on and off the field.

One of the key elements that sets Dreamers in Action apart is its mentorship structure. Throughout their involvement in the program, youth participants are paired with dedicated mentors who guide them through not only their soccer development but also their personal journeys. These mentors provide emotional support, career guidance, and practical advice, helping young people navigate the challenges of growing up. With the guidance of a mentor, youth can gain a clearer vision of their future, build self-confidence, and understand the power of perseverance. The positive relationships formed through mentorship create a sense of stability, offering guidance when navigating life’s obstacles and empowering youth to make positive, informed decisions.

At the core of Dreamers in Action is its emphasis on teamwork and collaboration. Soccer itself is an inherently team-based sport, and through participating in it, young people learn the importance of working together toward a common goal. They develop vital skills such as communication, trust, and conflict resolution, which are crucial in everyday life. These experiences on the field translate into the real world, where these young athletes use teamwork and collaboration to solve problems, navigate group dynamics, and pursue collective success. In a world where working together is essential for progress, Dreamers in Action helps mold the next generation of leaders who understand the value of unity and cooperative efforts.

Beyond the technical skills learned through soccer, Dreamers in Action places a strong focus on cultivating the values of discipline, resilience, and communication. Discipline is key in soccer, where training, commitment, and focus are necessary to succeed. Participants learn that success doesn’t happen overnight—it’s the result of hard work and consistent effort. Similarly, resilience is built as players face challenges, whether it’s a loss in a game or overcoming personal obstacles. Through this program, youth understand that setbacks are just stepping stones to success. By pushing through difficult moments, they emerge stronger and more determined to reach their goals. The value of communication is also emphasized, as players must work together, communicate effectively, and respect each other to succeed both on and off the field. These life skills help develop strong, confident leaders who are prepared for future challenges.

What truly makes Dreamers in Action stand out is its approach to leadership development. In addition to soccer, the program offers young participants the opportunity to develop leadership skills in both individual and group settings. They take part in leadership workshops, team-building exercises, and community engagement projects that encourage them to take on leadership roles within the program and their communities. This holistic approach empowers youth not just to be athletes, but to become advocates, change-makers, and leaders in their schools and communities. The leadership lessons learned through Dreamers in Action have a lasting impact, as they equip young people with the confidence, vision, and skills needed to take initiative and create change.

The program also fosters a deep sense of community engagement. It encourages youth to connect with their peers, mentors, and local organizations, fostering a spirit of giving back and community responsibility. Through outreach projects, local partnerships, and volunteer initiatives, participants become actively involved in their neighborhoods, contributing to the well-being of those around them. This sense of social responsibility not only strengthens the bonds within the program but also teaches youth the importance of community involvement and the power of collective action in making positive changes.

In conclusion, the Dreamers in Action Soccer Program is far more than a typical sports program. It’s a transformative experience that provides young people with the tools they need to thrive in all areas of life—mentorship, teamwork, discipline, resilience, leadership, and community. Through a unique combination of sports, personal development, and community engagement, this program helps shape well-rounded, confident, and empowered youth who are ready to take on the world and lead with purpose. Dreamers in Action is more than just a soccer program—it’s a launchpad for the next generation of leaders, advocates, and change-makers.

The Beauty of Our African Roots

The Beauty of Our African Roots event, hosted by AYDEPI in June 2024, was a remarkable celebration of culture and community. Youth, parents, partners, and friends gathered to honor Africa’s rich traditions through vibrant music, captivating dance, stunning art, and powerful storytelling. Special guests included Federal Way Mayor Jim Ferrell, Council Members, and other community leaders, who joined in celebrating the spirit of unity and pride. The event showcased the beauty of African heritage while fostering connections among diverse groups. Guests were inspired by cultural performances led by diverse students representing their cultures, as well as educational displays and heartfelt speeches emphasizing the importance of preserving and sharing these traditions.

Among the five teams competing in cultural dances, Angola won the title, South Sudan placed second, and Kenya (Kikuyu) came third. “We hope to have another exciting cultural event next year,” said Ashley Stephen, Office Administrator. This was the third annual event, and the youth are hopeful to raise funds to host the fourth event in June or July 2025.

Bridge to Harmony

The Bridge to Harmony: Young Kings Mentorship Program, led by Coach Anthony Curtis, Executive Director of the Black Equality Coalition, has made a significant impact on 50 boys in South King County. Focusing on self-regulation, violence prevention, and emotional resilience, the program aimed to address conflicts and reduce risky behaviors. With Coach Curtis’s leadership, participants engaged in one-on-one coaching, group mentorship, and hands-on workshops that helped them identify emotional triggers and learn conflict resolution strategies. Over 90% of the youth demonstrated positive behavioral changes, including improved anger management and reduced violence. Success stories include youth reconnecting with school, avoiding negative influences, and becoming role models in their communities. Through stipends, refreshments, and a supportive environment, Bridge to Harmony provided both practical tools and life-changing values. The program continues to empower youth to lead positive, impactful lives, and its success is a testament to Coach Curtis’s dedication and vision.

FAFSA and WASFA Application Support

Aydepi’s Young Mentors played a crucial role in supporting their peers with FAFSA and WASFA applications, helping underrepresented and low-income students navigate the often complex financial aid process. These mentors, trained to understand the intricacies of both FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and WASFA (Washington Application for State Financial Aid), provided personalized assistance to students in South King County, Spokane, and Whitman. They conducted one-on-one counseling sessions, answered questions, and clarified eligibility requirements. Additionally, they led workshops and educational seminars, explaining the differences between FAFSA and WASFA and guiding students through the application steps. Their outreach extended beyond individual meetings, with mentors creating and sharing video content and materials in multiple languages, including French, Swahili, Lingala, and Arabic, to ensure accessibility for diverse communities. Through this initiative, Aydepi’s Young Mentors empowered their peers with the knowledge and confidence needed to successfully apply for financial aid and pursue higher education opportunities.
